Yes, I am in business to make money and support my family. And as a small business owner – it is extremely competitive and can be a grind at times. But, because our company’s services make a REAL difference in people’s lives, after 30 years I can comfortably say I love being a roofer. It’s not like being a doctor saving patient’s lives, but my business is such an important service to homeowners who need to know they have a solid roof over their heads to protect their own families.
Of all the maintenance issues that go with owning a home, there’s nothing worse than having a leaky roof — which happens more often now because of climate change.
We had the wettest July New Jersey has had in years. According to Rutgers NJ Weather Network, “The statewide average precipitation of 7.59” was 2.88” above the 1991–2020 normal and ranked 8th wettest of all Julys back to 1895. It was the wettest July since 1975 and the second wettest in almost 50 years. ” Most of these rainfalls included high winds which is a lethal combination for roofs to endure. Add to this the recent storm Henri and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to abate any time soon.
Watching water drip down from the ceiling into your living room, seeing cracked paint on the walls and discolored or buckled floors are anxiety-provoking to experience in a place where you are supposed to feel the safest. It reminds families and communities just how vulnerable they are – even in their own homes
That’s Why I Love Being a Roofer
I Love Being a Roofer – keeping people safe in their homes is an extremely satisfying occupation. I never come across a roof I can’t repair or replace. I never have to say, “Sorry folks – there’s nothing we can do for you.”
Because we have been in business for more than 100 years, we have seen it all and we are sympathetic to our customer’s anxieties and frustrations. We also have years of experience to properly diagnose the source of the leak and the proper craftsmanship to repair it without gouging our customers in their time of need.
We provide a 2-year guarantee on labor on all roof repairs and a 10 guarantee for materials on new roofs. So, if the repair we make doesn’t fix the leak entirely, our customers know we are only a phone call away and ready to return to make things right. Not many roofing companies provide this service and we are happy to do it.
My 25-year-old son recently joined the business and is currently in training. He will be the fourth generation to own and operate Michael J Harris, Inc. As Jack and I ride around the many different communities meeting with customers in towns like South Orange, Maplewood, Montclair, Millburn, Elizabeth, Linden, Madison, etc I am proud to point out the roofs we have repaired /rebuilt and how well they have stood up over time.
Jack is proud of the business’ heritage and looks forward to continuing the legacy of providing a valued service to homeowners in a time of need. I hope he will love his job as much as I do.
